Brooklyn Kids Beach Time 🏖 — It’s summer in New York City, and though all public pools are closed because of Coronavirus, kids still need a way to cool themselves off from the sweltering New York heat. Nikon F2s / Kodak Portra 400 © 2020 Gavin Haag

Commuter in Mask Transferring Trains — I haven't taken a subway since March. It's August. I suppose if this guy can, I should too. Nikon F2s / Kodak Portra 400 ©2020 Gavin Haag
Jason — While I was messing around on the J train Lorimer platform taking long exposures, this guy stopped me thinking I was another photographer he’d recently met. I told him I wasn’t, but we got to talking. He shared his story of surviving Covid. He came down with the disease in May and was hospitalized. He said he was in a room that shared a hallway on the way to the morgue. He would see gurneys carrying bodies hour after hour, day after day. The doctor told him because of his strong heart, due to his being an athlete, he survived. Despite living on the streets, he said he is incredibly grateful to be alive. When I asked if I could photograph him, he was enthusiastic. I think he wanted to be seen. He wanted to share his story. His energy was infectious. This is Jason. He is a survivor. If you see Jason near Broadway Avenue in Brooklyn, say hi for me. I hope to see him again soon. Nikon F2s / Kodak Portra 400 ©2020 Gavin Haag

Street DJ — Clubs and bars are closed so the street is the dance floor. I was walking up Graham Avenue around midnight on a Saturday night and this guy had a supremely loud DJ set up knocking out bangers for the neighborhood. This is East Williamsburg, New York in 2020. Side Eyed — She wasn't too pleased with this photographer. Couldn't resist making a picture of these two women, both of whom are wearing nearly identical outfits: light colored button shirt, white hat and blue surgical mask. Nikon F2s / Kodak Portra 400 ©2020 Gavin Haag

Bodega Divider — Inside bodegas in New York, they have installed plastic dividers of all kinds at the register to protect employees from their customers. As the pandemic has gone on, it's been learned that transmission of the Coronavirus is highest indoors. Essential workers, like people working in bodegas, need to protect themselves as they are in a high risk category. I'm thankful for them. Where else am I going to buy my TP, and in this case, beer? Jump Rope — Hey, with gyms closed people still need exercise. Gyms, restaurants, shopping -- these things are moving outdoors during the pandemic in New York City. I dread what will happen in the winter though when it’s too cold to be outside. For now, we do what we must. Nikon F2s / Kodak Portra 400 © 2020 Gavin Haag
